I absolutely hate colds. I mean who doesn’t, but I get really miserable. Since I changed my diet a number of years ago, I found that I don’t get sick as often. Still, I can’t completely escape the occasional ailment.
I also hate medication. My body is very sensitive, so I try to avoid taking anything that may trigger some random reaction. Instead, I opt for home remedies where possible.
1. Turmeric Tea
Turmeric is bae. I first discovered turmeric as an anti-inflammatory after an injury. I was stretching after a workout and immediately felt heat running through my leg. Then, I developed a literal pain in the ass. The doctor told me I could have some sciatica and he could treat them through anti-inflammatories and muscle relaxants. NATURALLY I came home and looked for home remedies. Everything I read pointed to turmeric. I whipped up golden milk (I’ll share this recipe soon) and instantly felt relief.
I thought, if turmeric was good for nerve inflammation, it must be good for other things, right? Right. Turns out, it’s good for colds too. I make it into a tea.
1/4 of a lemon
1 tsp apple cider vinegar
1 tsp turmeric
pinch of fresh black pepper
1 tsp honey
It works wonders. Drink a glass of room temperature or hot water in between doses and bask in the glory of an expedited illness. Don’t leave out the black pepper – it helps activate the turmeric.
2. Spicy Lemonade
I work in an open work space. It only takes one sick person to get the whole floor coughing, and who REALLY has time for that?!? I use this as prevention and treatment. I hear one person coughing and out comes my cayenne or I’m at the Indian spot for Spicy Tikka Masala. I’ve literally been the only well person on the floor thanks to the homie, capsaicin. Capsaicin is the chemical compound in spicy things. It will clear up your congestion and nasal passages in one swoop.
1/4 tsp cayenne pepper
1 tsp of honey
It just works.
3. Hot Toddy
Listen. I don’t know if this actually does anything but it’s a part of my feel better trio. Even if it just knocks me out early, the more I sleep, the faster the cold goes away.
Your favorite tea (I like either plain, decaf, black tea, or Yogi’s Lemon Ginger)
1/4 cup (or more) of Jack Honey
1/2 tsp honey
Again. I don’t know any active ingredients. Just have some likka and go to sleep happy.
*Raise your hot toddy* Cheers to beating the yuckies.
