5 Tips for Managing Burnout

Simply put, burnout is a mess. It makes you feel like a mess too. It drags your concentration and productivity into a black hole and leaves you with nothing. It’s essentially the body’s way of saying “lay down.” While burnout is nearly inevitable at some point in your journey, since there is ALWAYS more to do, it is also manageable. 1. Lay Down. I know I talk about sleep all the time. But here it is again – lay down. Don’t just pass out, wind down properly. Have some tea (maybe splash it with a little Jack or a little Hen Friend), read a book, journal, whatever, THEN pull the covers up to your neck and go to bed. You won’t burn out as easily if you get proper rest along the way.   2. Make peace with your to do list. This could also be called PRIORITIZE. There are […]

Balance Your Day In 3 Simple Steps

We all have a lot going on in our lives. If you’re here, you’re probably working a ton with some combination of a 9-5 and entrepreneurship. You don’t need anyone telling you to work more. You’re GOOD on that. For you (and me) it soooooo important to have wellness practices in place to balance out the work and keep your energy up. I live by the Chew-Chuckle-Chill mantra to sanity. 1. Chew So many of us are not flourishing because we aren’t eating the right things. Fast food, while convenient, is not giving you the energy to keep going. Make time in your day to eat real, balanced meals and drink water. Clearly, eating has to be done in real time, but prepping for meals once or twice a week can set you up for success. I’m a 5-6 “meal” a day girl. My daily food intake is usually includes: • […]

5 Keys to Hustling Whole

When I returned to the entrepreneurial good fight after my first bout of serious anxiety, I found I was unable to grind while everyone else slept – I needed sleep. That realization made me think about hustling a little differently. These 5 things were instrumental to my productivity and mental health while grinding.   SLEEP  GO TO FUCKING SLEEP, OK? Go to sleep. To hell with all the “hustle” mantras, all the “I’ll sleep when I’m deads.” The body restores itself during sleep. If you never go to sleep, how will you have any energy to keep grinding? When I was in law school, I read that Diddy only sleeps about four hours a day. Of course, I tried it. I studied until 2AM and woke up at 6AM to prep for class and study more. I won’t lie – for about a couple days I was pretty productive. But […]

Catch This Word: Elizabeth Gilbert on Being Yourself

I know some people don’t really go up for Elizabeth Gilbert’s Eat, Pray, Love. It is a privileged and indulgence perspective, but that book was an integral part of my journey. I started reading the night after I finished the Bar exam. At that point, I was well aware that I had no interest in practicing law. In fact, I had known for over a year at that point. But I’d already spent the time in law school so I took the Bar exam as the period to end of a very long, convoluted run on sentence. As much relief as I felt that the exam was over, I found myself on the bathroom floor weeping after the test. I had no idea what I was doing with my life, no idea where I was headed. So I grabbed the book. It opened up with Liz on the bathroom floor sobbing, staring down the end of […]

7 Ways to Inspire Creativity in You

It’s the beginning of the year. Everyone, present company included, is high off the victory of crossing the threshold of another year and looking for opportunities to start afresh. It is so easy to let this feeling fade as the month goes on. Now is the time to capitalize on your optimism and kick your creativity into high gear. Setting a good foundation now is essential for the work to come.  Jump start your creativity in these 7 fun ways: 1. Pinterest. Pinterest is perhaps my favorite social media tool. If you are a visual creative like me, it is priceless. While I’m incredibly visual, I’m not at all artistically inclined. Because Pinterest is a search engine of beautiful things, I am no longer limited by my artistic ability (read: lack thereof). I go to Pinterest and draw inspiration for projects and life. I  also tell the stories I want to […]

3 Reminders of Your Dopeness

Look. This entrepreneurial journey is hard. I get it. I was there, I’m still there sometimes. But you are dope *insert flames emoji* Here’s why: Law school is HARD. The Bar Exam is CRUEL. You survived. You graduated. You passed. A lot of people didn’t. That already puts you in an elite group. You had the courage to say “fuck it, I’m unhappy” and MOVE ON. I can’t count the number of attorneys I meet that say they hate the practice of law, but have 20 years in the game or can’t think of anything they would rather do, so there they sit. Who wants to be unhappy for the rest of their lives?!?! I don’t care if you have 5 years or 50 years left on this earth, its too long to be unhappy. You’re multi-gifted. I know this can cause some confusion and feel more like a curse than […]
